After reading four reviews and asking peops on Facebook I wasn’t expecting much from George Clooney’s latest flick, The American. But I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was pretty to look at and had the hypnotic pace and attention to detail of a foreign film. The main problem was that it was promoted as an action film and it’s not really—not in the style of American blockbusters. It is really a portrait of a man, a very skilled and lonely man leading a meaningless life. He realizes this and begins to change. One review I read said Clooney was totally unlikable in this movie. I disagree. I felt for him. I was invested in him as a character and intrigued. I give it 3 stars out of four. I had only expected a two-star movie. In other news, I bought tickets to the original Exorcist movie which will be in theatres for one night only—September 30th. Seeing The Last Exorcism recently made me crave the original. Until Silence of the Lambs came out The Exorcist was my all-time fave. The Last Exorcism was a cheap gimmicky ghost story. I found it’s eerieness enjoyable but left the theatre feeling rather disappointed. I’m sure that between now and Xmas the movies will get better and better as they vie for the Oscar.
