Austin Eubanks Told Me His Story

Austin Eubanks was one of the survivors from 1999’s horrific mass shooting at Columbine High School. Tragically, his best friend Corey DePooter was murdered by the gunman. After Eubanks was severely traumatized and vulnerable, doctors began prescribing him painkillers. I know from experience, opioids are only effective for relieving short-term physical pain. They are extremely addicting and have side-effects. Long-term use can be disastrous.

Eubanks Kicked Drugs

After the shooting, Eubanks developed an opiate addiction. But at the time of our interview, he’d fought the battle of quitting drugs. Eubanks excitedly told me about his treatment and how he’d learned to live clean and sober. This is after he’d almost lost everything due to his addiction taking him to the brink.

Dealing With Survivor’s Guilt

During our interview he confided, “I could literally get whatever I wanted. Telling them I’d been shot at Columbine and lost my best friend was like getting an open prescription book from every doctor. I’d been filled with grief and survivor’s guilt. But I finally found lasting recovery.”

It has been more than two decades since this article was published. However, today, when I saw David Hoggs was trending on twitter, it brought me back to my interview with another gun violence survivor who weathered his pain by turning into an activist.

RIP Austin Eubanks (Oct 8, 1981 – May 18, 2019 ).

Seventeen years ago, 17-year-old Austin Eubanks was terrorized during the Columbine High School massacre. It was on April 20, 1999 and Eubanks was in the library with his best friend Corey DePooter when they heard a bomb go off. It was chaos and Eubanks ran to hide under a desk. He was shot in the arm and knee, but his deepest wounds were emotional. Austin saw his best friend murdered in a barrage of bullets.

“My injuries were not to the point of needing an opiate pain medication,” Eubanks told The Fix in an exclusive interview. “But I was immediately given a 30-day supply. Within three months I became addicted.” From then on, he said, “I used substances every day, day in and day out.”

After the shooting, his parents took him to see a therapist who said Austin was too shut down to process his horrific trauma. But the reason no one could reach him was because he was overmedicated.

“I learned to manipulate doctors,” Eubanks said. “I could literally get whatever I wanted. Telling them I’d been shot at Columbine and lost my best friend was like [getting] an open prescription book from any doctor.”

Austin never went back to school at Columbine and his parents hired a tutor. He graduated in 2000 and attended the Columbine ceremonies without setting foot back in the school. He went into advertising and married in his early 20s. He and his wife had a son, but Eubanks’ substance abuse escalated. His first attempt to get sober was in 2006. “I went to a 30-day inpatient program,” he said, “but within hours of leaving, I went right back to the same regimen—abusing pain pills and Adderall.”

Right before Columbine, young Austin had been misdiagnosed with ADD.

“I didn’t have ADD,” said Eubanks. “I just liked being outdoors and playing golf better than being in school. At that time, if anybody was truant at school they said, ‘Oh, they must be ADD. Let’s put them on a stimulant.’ That was why I got Adderall. I liked it because I could abuse opiate pain medication to the level that most people would be nodding out. With Adderall, I could function. Basically, I was doing oral speedballs. It was like using methamphetamine and heroin.”

His second try at living clean came in 2008. His son was three and he was separated from his wife. “That’s when I started to have an intrinsic motivation to change. I went to treatment, stayed 90 days, and achieved eight months of sobriety.”

He and his wife reunited and decided to have a second child. Another boy was born.

“This is one of the examples that I use when I give presentations about learning every way that doesn’t work. First, I did the normal addict path. I achieved abstinence for a period of time, and built up enough false confidence to where I said, ‘I can drink, because alcohol was never a problem for me.’ I went back to drinking. After a few weeks, drinking led back to smoking weed. Smoking weed led back to Xanax, which led back to Oxycontin, and then I was right back into the same routine.”

In 2011, he was approaching 30 and estranged from his wife and kids. “My sobriety date is April 2, 2011. I woke up in a jail cell and had absolutely no idea how I got there.”

The last thing he remembered was heading to see the Colorado Rockies baseball team on opening day. He’d been using Oxycontin and drinking, and had passed out in a restaurant. Police arrived and arrested him for probation violation. Due to his addiction, Eubanks spent years in and out of the court system for various offenses, including car theft and writing bad checks.

“I woke up, I opened my eyes in jail, sick. I was in withdrawal from opiates. I was hungover from alcohol. That was the absolute lowest moment of my life. I had ruined the marriage. I had two children I was estranged from. I told myself, ‘If I don’t stop right now, I’m going to die’ and I wasn’t ready to do that. I hit multiple rock bottoms and finally came to understand that I had learned every way that doesn’t work, and I gave up the fight to keep trying to [get sober] on my own. I went into treatment and said, ‘Tell me how to walk, how to talk, what to do and I will do it.’”

After staying mum all these years, Eubanks decided it was finally time to talk about his addiction publicly. “By talking about being at that low place in my life, it’s my attempt at helping others. I’m proof there is a path out and there’s a path out for everybody, regardless of where you are in life and what you’ve lost.”

When he finally found what he calls his “lasting recovery,” it was not in a 12-step program. “I had gone to a 12-step rehab,” said Eubanks. “I used the 12 steps, I worked them, I met with a sponsor. But I left there with two words in my mind: powerlessness and disease. Those are two dangerous words to put in somebody’s mind who is trying to enact behavioral change in their life. I’m not contesting the value of 12 steps and I’m not saying that addiction is not a disease, but I’m saying that you have to approach it from a position of empowerment to create a life for yourself that is so great you can’t imagine going back to using substances. Without that, relapse is much more common.”

He credits a therapeutic community (TC) for his long-term sobriety. “They focused on the behaviors around addiction.” He stayed for seven months. “The TC model helped me understand what was happening in my brain. I’ve always been a thinker. It was really beneficial to be able to say [to myself], ‘These decisions are happening right now in your life because this is how your brain is functioning. This is what’s happening in your prefrontal cortex. This is the reason for your impulsivity. This is what your mid-brain functionality looks like. This is what it’s going to look like at three months of abstinence. This is what it’ll look like at six months of abstinence. At a year of abstinence, if you’re able to achieve that, your brain is going to be fundamentally different than it was in the beginning.’”

Eubanks learned what his triggers were. “I could say, ‘These are impulses I’m having right now, but there’s a date on the calendar where my brain is going to be functioning differently. If I continue to exhibit pro-social behaviors and work toward that goal, I’m going to continue to make progress.’ It helped me as a roadmap.”

Now sober five years, he works for The Foundry, a TC substance abuse treatment center in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. “We talk to people about brain function,” said Eubanks, “about transactional analysis and what that looks like; what ego states make our decisions and why impulsivity is so strong. And why an addict behaves like a rebellious child. Then we apply all that to 12-step principles, which we have found to be phenomenally beneficial for people.”

Eubanks believes that addiction is on a spectrum, similar to autism and Asperger’s. “That spectrum is dictated by a number of factors and it’s everything from IQ to socioeconomic status to somebody’s social group to the age of the first time they used. A lot of things contribute to a person’s ability to function for a life of abstinence. We have to look at that on a case-by-case basis.”

It’s true, one size does not fit all and individuals require different tools. You might have somebody able to function in an environment where there’s alcohol around and not be susceptible to relapse, while others can never be in an environment like that without the risk of slipping.

The Foundry’s TC model is based on four pillars: medical, clinical, wellness and family. Medical includes tests to determine blood levels and how a patient metabolizes medication. When appropriate, medication is prescribed. Clinical includes counseling, observation, and treatment to help patients cope with behavioral, mental and emotional problems that interfere with their daily lives. Wellness may include yoga, diet and exercise to help build a better life. Family may involve working with families on a weekly basis and then bringing them out for a family intensive, where they go through the curricula for three days with other families.

“The message I want to send to people is to ask for help,” Eubanks said. “I lived in the dark for over a decade in my addiction. I could never see the path out. Ask for help because it’s there. I finally took the road of recovery and never looked back. Through that process, I was able to re-establish a relationship with my children that is fantastic today. They play a big part in my life. I have a functional relationship with my ex-wife, who is now remarried and I’m recently engaged and going to be married again. Life is too good to ever consider going back to where I was.”

I had to share this Ms. Foundation statement about the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Win! “Ms. Foundation applauds President-elect Joseph R. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their monumental victory.”

We are ecstatic to witness the first Black—or South Asian—person and the first-ever WOMAN elected to serve as Vice President of the United States!
Ms. Foundation

Vice President-elect Harris’ achievement builds on the foundation laid by past and present feminists, like Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Hillary Clinton, Stacey Abrams, and many others. A joyous congratulations to the Biden-Harris team. And to all those whose collective efforts brought us to this moment.

We recognize the countless and arduous efforts of Black women and women of color, who long have been the backbone of our democratic process. And the many whose grassroots efforts contributed to this crucial win.

We are proud and moved to witness the unquestionable impact of their leadership in one of the most tenuous moments we have faced as a nation. Once again, it could not be clearer that we must prioritize this treasure of our democracy and radically increase support for feminist and women of color leaders whose visionary commitment to justice carries us forward toward a more perfect union.
Ms. Foundation

President-elect Biden’s words on Saturday evening stirred hope. [They] refreshed our spirit for the … road ahead…. All of us need to remain attentive and engaged in the months and years ahead, as we mentioned in our latest statement.

The Ms. Foundation is already hard at work. We won’t falter in this fight. We’ll continue to build feminist power by supporting and amplifying the work of grassroots organizations led by and for women and girls of color until there is full gender and racial equity for all people.

Let’s enjoy a deep breath and then let’s get to it!

In celebration,

Ms. Foundation for Women

Join a protest

There are protests happening across the country in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, Anti-Racism, and Criminal Justice Reform.

Have a conversation

One of the most powerful ways that we can be allies right now is by listening. Reach out to your black friends, neighbors, and colleagues during this traumatic time. Don’t make the conversation about you. Rather, work to create a space for them to share their experience with race and racism. We white Americans often shy away from these difficult conversations and in doing so silence black voices and stories. Let’s work to change that both on the national stage and in our personal relationships. Keeping an open dialogue is critical to maintaining momentum in the fight against racism.

Donate

Several organizations are fighting against racism and police brutality at one time. You can select an amount to donate and allocate the funds across the organizations listed below. This is great way to support multiple facets of the anti-racism movement at once, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed by the number of options. See a brief description donate directly to each organization included below:

Black Lives Matter Global Network

“#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.”

Reclaim the Block

“Reclaim the Block began in 2018 and organizes Minneapolis community and city council members to move money from the police department into other areas of the city’s budget that truly promote community health and safety. We believe health, safety and resiliency can exist without police of any kind. We organize around policies that strengthen community-led safety initiatives and reduce reliance on police departments.”

National Bail Fund

“National Bail Fund Network is made up of over sixty community bail and bond funds across the country and is working to coordinate bail efforts for protestors.” To donate to local bail funds and support protestors in your state / community or those states / communities in particular need directly, see the comprehensive list of local bail funds here.

Black Visions Collective

“Since 2017, Black Visions Collective, has been putting into practice the lessons learned from organizations before us in order to shape a political home for Black people across Minnesota. We aim to center our work in healing and transformative justice principles, intentionally develop our organizations core “DNA” to ensure sustainability, and develop Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns. By building movements from the ground up with an integrated model, we are creating the conditions for long term success and transformation.”

democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. LDF also defends the gains and protections won over the past 75 years of civil rights struggle and works to improve the quality and diversity of judicial and executive appointments.”

Executive Producer Nancy Spielberg and Writer-Director Robert Grossman ask the crucial questions in their award-winning film, Who Will Write Our History. Seeking historical accuracy their questions include: Which side of the story becomes the official narrative? and Whose accounts do we elevate to the level of truth? This indie film couldn’t be more timely.
During this fraught time in American politics, we are now beginning 2019 continuing to question which outlets are providing the provable facts versus the #FakeNews or “Alternative Facts” that are running rampant across the internet from outlets like Fox and Breitbart sites. At this frightening time of Holocaust deniers and White Supremacy at an all time high, we must focus on the facts. This movie is a must-see for anyone who cares about what really happened.

“This Sunday, January 27, UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, and over 350 venues in 55 countries, will host an unprecedented screening of the award-winning documentary, “Who Will Write Our History” and concurrent Facebook Live events. The international screening events and Facebook Live, orchestrated by Abramorama, and with the support of UNESCO, the World Jewish Congress’ #WeRemember initiative and multiple major partner organizations, takes place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and comes at a time of rising anti-Semitism, anti-Semitic attacks, and increasing concerns that the lessons of the Holocaust are quickly being forgotten.”

I feel a personal connection to this film by Spielberg and Grossman due to my family’s horrific past in Europe where they died in the Nazi concentration camps. My father’s cousin meticulously researched what happened to our family. Many were killed in the camps. The most frightening was the family members who died in Auschwitz. We will never know if they were experimented on by the demonic Dr. Josef Mengele.
Watch the Trailer
Synopsis: This film is about a courageous group of resistance fighters imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto in World War II. In November 1940, days after the Nazis sealed 450,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper. Now, for the first time, their story is told as a feature documentary.
The New York Times calls it, “A vital Holocaust documentary…Heartbreaking.”
Writter and director Roberta Grossman and executive producer Spielberg teamed up once again to create Who Will Write Our History which the writings of the Oyneg Shabes archive with new interviews, rarely seen footage, and stunning dramatizations that transport us inside the Ghetto and the lives of these courageous resistance fighters. They defied their murderous enemy with the ultimate weapon—the truth—and risked everything so that their archive would survive the war, even if they did not.

In this fourth annual three-day program, THROUGH HER LENS, five emerging USA-based female writers of short-narrative films will receive one-on-one mentorship, artistic guidance, and financial support from Tribeca and Chanel.

$100,000 in Filmmaker Grants

4th Annual 3-Day Program

The Leadership Committee includes Kathryn Bigelow, Lena Dunham and Courteney Cox. The purpose of this extraordinary opportunity is to propel women filmmakers forward.
@Tribeca     #ThroughHerLens     #WhatsYourStory
Presented by Tribeca and Chanel, in collaboration with Pulse Films, and facilitated by Tribeca Film Institute (TFI), this immersive program provides one-on-one mentorship and industry support, along with guidance for artistic development. The intense master classes run for three days.

The winning female filmmaker in the competition will be awarded full financing to produce their short film and will receive support from Tribeca Studios to bring the film project to fruition.

Here’s How It Works

Five short film projects were selected from women storytellers. During this past summer, each of the five chosen filmmakers were given the extraordinary opportunity to work with writing mentors who helped to shape and refine each of the five projects.

When and Where

From October 16 to 18, the filmmakers will gather in New York City with the mentor and program advisors for an in-depth intimate program concentrating on script-to-screen development, casting, finding collaborators, and working with cinematographers, music composers, costume designers, and producers. The selected program participants will attend master classes and have individual mentoring sessions with leading women in filmmaking, meet distributors, and spend concentrated time refining their pitching skills.

It’s a Win-Win

On the final day, each of the five filmmakers will pitch their projects to a jury of industry experts. Although only one woman will receive the full financing, no one among these five carefully-chosen filmmakers will lose. The four runners up will also receive grant money to assist in the further development of their films.

Women’s health is on life support. Inequities in insurance premiums, gender bias, treatment and care must end. Women’s health doesn’t advance itself, so it’s up to women to be their own healthcare advocates.
Women have always been marginalized and treated differently by doctors and medical researchers. Although attitudes are slowly changing, women are still grossly underserved. According to the American Heart Association, one in three women die from heart disease.
Ms. Understood is a 2018 report (©Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada) that describes the “Ms. Understanding” and “Ms. Diagnoses” women face. It states, “Women’s hearts are victims of a system that is ill-equipped to diagnose, treat and support them.” Women and men present disparate warning signs before a heart attack. Hollywood depicts sudden shooting pain, clutching chest. Gasps and a stagger later, the actor drops to the floor. Women’s indicators are often subtle: fatigue, light-headedness, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, or back/shoulder/jaw pain.

On May 17, over 300 Hadassah members and supporters will participate in Hadassah’s Day on the Hill, meeting with members of Congress to advocate for Hadassah’s concerns on women’s health equity, gun control and for Israel’s security and stronger US-Israel relations.

Women aren’t just mini-men. Our bodies react to diseases and medications differently; most clinical trials don’t reflect this because the studies use a disproportionate number of male participants. The result is too many women dying. According to Ms. Understood, heart attack signs were missed in 78 percent of females; of those who’d had a heart attack, more were likely to die or suffer a second attack.
It is a long-held misconception that women are too emotional and our health problems are psychosomatic. Male doctors can be condescending and dismissive. Women describe pain but are told to see a psychiatrist. When males voice pain, doctors are quicker to offer treatment.
Chicago author Lea Grover had skin cancers (single-cell carcinoma, melanoma); six moles were removed. “I opt for female doctors whenever possible,” said Lea. “But only one dermatologist on my plan could always see me immediately.” She went monthly but he never remembered her or her medical history. One visit, during a pregnancy, her doctor said, “It’s just a freckle! Women in your condition get hysterical over nothing.” Furious, Lea reminded him that he’d removed four cancerous and pre-cancerous moles. He rolled his eyes and left the room, leaving her to wait forty-five minutes. Finally, Lea overheard the dermatologist telling a female oncologist “You’re a woman, calm her down.”
When the oncologist glanced at Lea’s mole, she said, “It’s nothing to worry about.” Lea yanked the neck of her T-shirt down, revealing a scar from a previously removed “freckle.” She demanded the oncologist examine her. “Finally,” said Lea, “she used a magnifying glass and told the dermatologist, ‘This does look like a Spitz nevus (skin lesion).’” That’s what it took to have it removed.
Many women aren’t aware lung cancer is a more frequent killer than breast cancer—even if they never smoked. Alzheimer’s Association determined women are at higher risk for Alzheimer’s. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, depression, and irritability, so it’s often misdiagnosed. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems. Symptoms include irritability, nervousness, sleep disturbance, infrequent menstrual periods, heat sensitivity, so they’re often told its menopause. Seventy-five percent of autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus, occur in women. It can take five years to pinpoint due to illusive signs (fatigue, trouble concentrating). MS is three times more prevalent in women and often undetected for years despite typical signs (fatigue, vision problems, tingling and numbness, pain and spasms).
More female stars are going public with their health scares. The message is clear: had it not been for gender bias in the medical community, health issues could have been diagnosed earlier.
Lady Gaga’s fibromyalgia was misdiagnosed. Selena Gomez’s lupus was misdiagnosed. Serena Williams saved her own life. Williams knew more about blood clots and the risk of a pulmonary embolism than her doctors or nurses did. Women must advocate and educate. Our best hope is becoming a unified voice.

National Women’s Health Week is May 13–19. During that time the Coalition for Women’s Health Equity convened by Hadassah will hold its second annual summit in Washington, DC. The Coalition’s 28 members include the American Heart Association, Black Women’s Health Imperative, WomenAgainstAlzheimer’s, N.O.W., Planned Parenthood, and other organizations fighting for gender equity in medical prevention, research, funding, and quality care.

With over 700 chapters across the country, Hadassah has members in every congressional district. On May 17, over 300 Hadassah members and supporters will participate in Hadassah’s Day on the Hill, meeting with members of Congress to advocate for Hadassah’s concerns on women’s health equity, gun control and for Israel’s security and stronger US-Israel relations.
Women’s health cannot advance itself but together we can raise awareness of women’s preventive health services. When we educate ourselves, communities and public officials, we can drive policy changes. By uniting to fight for health equity we save lives.

SAVE THE DATE! May 18–19, 2018
ASJA’s 47th Annual Writers Conference

Note: The 2018 conference will be held at a new venue this year: Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, 811 7th Avenue at West 53rd Street, New York City. The conference Members Day is May 18 and the Open Day is May 19.
I am excited to be taking this work on! My dad always said, “If you want something done, give it to the busiest person and they’ll get it done.” ASJA is filled with hard-working freelance writers who are accustomed to nutty deadlines and being adept at multi-tasking. I’m honored to be part of this amazing team led by ASJA president Sherry Beck Paprocki.
I am thrilled — absolutely gleeful — that my proposal for the conference theme has been chosen! It is based on the three tracks: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
The 2018 theme is:

Navigate, Motivate, Captivate

I will be serving as the Advanced Track chair. It is an honor to have been chosen. ASJA has helped me find success as a full-time freelance writer. I work in my home office with my beloved dog Buddy James at my feet. Thank you, ASJA!

We Are Seeking Conference Panel Proposals • Deadline is Nov 10th

The NYC Conference’s theme for 2018 is Navigate, Motivate, Captivate. This year, we’re featuring three tracks for beginners, mid-career writers and advanced storytelling techniques.
We are currently soliciting proposals for panels and workshops that will inspire, motivate and empower journalists, nonfiction and literary nonfiction writers at all stages of their careers. Emphasis will be put on professional development as it relates to these three tracks of freelance writing, such as workshops on pitching, making new career moves, finding increased income, querying book agents, and publishing in all aspects such as books and magazines.
What We Are Looking For In a Session Proposal
We prefer workshops that focus on craft and those with a “how-to” aspect. We want single session leaders who are experts in their field and savvy in social media. We’re seeking panels that offer real service to our attendees. In particular, we’re looking for diversity in panelists — racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, age, gender identity, marital and parental status.
If you’re interested in speaking, please complete this form.
Please note that we are unable to offer monetary compensation for travel or presenting. All participants must be available during the entire two days of the conference, May 18 and May 19, as scheduling will be at the discretion of the conference committee.
Deadline: November 10, 5:00 pm ET

Writers: If you are interested in joining ASJA…

Track Chair Bios

Dorri Olds is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in book anthologies, newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Marie Claire, Woman’s Day and The Forward. Her social media following includes over a million views on YouTube. As a full-time freelancer she divides her time between writing personal essays, pop culture articles, service pieces, movie reviews and interviewing A-List celebrities. She is currently working on a book about misogyny and rape culture.
“ASJA is so fortunate to have these prolific writers agree to work together to make this upcoming conference one of the most relevant conferences available to freelance writers and authors in the industry,” says ASJA President Sherry Beck Paprocki. “As ASJA moves to a new conference venue next spring, the tri-chairs promise to deliver important content for all writers—whether they are just starting out in the profession or they have long-time writing experience. We are looking forward to the months of planning that will create a must-attend conference next spring.”

Here is one of my personal ASJA Success Stories:
ASJA is so worth the cost of membership. Every year that I attend the annual conference in New York City, I make back much more money than I spent. Last year, during speed pitches, I met the lovely Woman’s Day editor, Maria Carter. We hit it off immediately. She has published three of my personal essays and is a dream to work with. Thank you, ASJA!

Like so many young girls before her, she was mesmerized by Manson. Her hippie parents gave her permission to become one of "Charlie’s girls." Co-written by Deborah Herman for HarperCollins, this disturbing and fascinating memoir tells of rape, survival and recovery.

Charles Manson Is Dead But…

Charles Manson is dead at age 83. The news release issued by the California Department of Corrections said he died of natural causes in a hospital.

Eerie Timing to Meet a Manson Family Member

The timing is eerie. Manson died and right after that I came face-to-face with a Manson Family member. Her name is Dianne Lake. She was in attendance at one of my Manhattan speaking events for writers. It was October 28 when we met near Penn Stations. The venue was inside the Hotel Pennsylvania.

After giving my talk on journalism in today’s media, and a Q&A afterwards, I headed for the elevator. After pressing the down arrow, I noticed two women beside me, also waiting. One had a hardcover book tucked under her arm. The cover photo of Charles Manson captured my gaze, as did the title, Member of the Family. I’ve been obsessed with true crime books since seventh grade when I discovered Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood and devoured it in two days.

Member of the Family by Dianne Lake, the youngest member of the Charles Manson Family

Helter Skelter & New Manson Book

Curious, I struck up a conversation. “I’ve read Helter Skelter three times,” I said with a smile. The woman who was holding the book turned out to be Lake’s co-author Deborah Herman. After introducing herself, Herman said, “Guess who this is.” She pointed to Lake and said “This is Dianne, the youngest member of the Manson family.”

I must’ve looked startled because Herman explained, “This is her story.” Then handed me the book.

Intrigued, I immediately read the subtitle: My Story of Charles Manson, Life Inside His Cult, and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties.

Meeting Manson Family Member

Although eager to read the jacket, I didn’t want to be rude so I looked up and extended my free hand to Lake. Hesitatingly, as if in slo-motion, Lake took my hand and we shook. She offered a polite hello in almost a whisper. Her cautious manner and the way she looked me in the eyes for only a moment before her gaze darted away, gave me the impression she was either shy, tired, or at the very least, uncomfortable in the moment. A feeling came over me that she too was a rape survivor.

The cliche, “It takes one to know one,” proved true as I read her heart-wrenching account.

I don’t want to give any spoilers because I highly recommend this book.

Member of the Family

My Story of Charles Manson, Life Inside His Cult, and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties

by Dianne Lake and Deborah Herman

At age 14, I became one of Charles Manson’s Girls. At 17 I helped put him in prison. This is my story.

— Diane Lake

At fourteen Dianne Lake—with little more than a note in her pocket from her hippie parents granting her permission to leave them—became one of “Charlie’s girls,” a devoted acolyte of cult leader Charles Manson. In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the twentieth century’s most notorious criminals and life as one of his “girls.”

Being Charlie’s Girl

Over the course of two years, the impressionable teenager endured manipulation, psychological control, and physical abuse as the harsh realities and looming darkness of Charles Manson’s true nature revealed itself. From Spahn ranch and the group acid trips, to the Beatles’ White Album and Manson’s dangerous messiah-complex, Dianne tells the riveting story of the group’s descent into madness as she lived it.

The Gruesome Crimes

Dianne Lake never participated in the group’s gruesome crimes. She was purposely insulated from them. However, Dianne was arrested with the rest of the Manson Family. When Diane learned more about the heinous Manson Family Murders, she joined the prosecution’s case against Manson.

She received help from the cop who arrested her and took her into his home. She met other good Samaritans along her journey. And that’s how the courageous young woman eventually found redemption and grew up to lead an ordinary life.

While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Manson Family cult member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying and fascinating chapters in modern American history.

Member of the Family includes 16 pages of photographs.
