I hope you enjoy my photos from the Annual Halloween Dog Parade in Tompkins Square Park. The costumes this year were spectacular. You can read about the “Howling Good Time” on Sniff and Barkens magazine.

More doggie ghosts from Halloweens past

There was a huge turnout despite the rainy, cold and windy weather. Here is a teaser of photos.

See more fun Halloween dog photography here!

One touching story came from Lorna Li who came dressed as a chef holding chopsticks. She talked about her darling dog, a Pekingese named Iggi. He has his own Instagram account: everyonesiggi. Read more about the amazing rescue of her little Iggi.

You’ll also hear exclusive quotes from beloved dog advocate Ada Nieves, who co-chaired the event.

Coretta Scott King Letter

To My Civil Rights Activist Mom

In the house I grew up, Mom had a framed letter from Coretta Scott King dated Nov. 10, 1966.
Justice in Winnetka

50 Years Later

On Sunday, July 26, the 2015 Justice Project: The March Continues rally was held in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka, Illinois. The event was a 50th anniversary commemoration of the North Shore Summer Project’s (NSSP) 1965 rally that brought 10,000 people together to listen to the stirring words of Martin Luther King Jr.

1965 Fair Housing Rally

That 1965 rally was the largest gathering ever before on the Winnetka Village Green, and the first time Dr. King ever spoke in an all-white suburb. One of the NSSP fair housing activists and rally organizers was my mom, Sally Wendkos Olds.

My Mom was not a political figure. She is a Jewish woman who excelled at writing and raising three kids with my doting Dad. Both parents wanted us to grow up in a just society of equal rights for everyone. Those rights should always include housing rights. In 1965, she worked as the publicity director and contact person for the Winnetka Village Green event. She also wrote a follow-up article for a Chicago church-published magazine called Community.

Racial Discrimination

The N-Word

My parents raised me to never discriminate against anyone based on the color of their skin – nor their religion. Hence, I took little notice of anyone’s skin-color. Sadly, in 1975, when I was in Weber Middle School in Port Washington, Long Island, there were creepy classmates who frequently called me “nigger lover.” I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that anybody actually still thought that way; that was my introduction to racism.

#BlackLivesMatter should not have to be a hashtag — it should be a given.

It’s a terrible stain on this great nation that racism still runs rampant here. I’d never bash America because I feel lucky to have been born in such a privileged country, but it is painful to hear what goes on outside of my insulated world of diversity and liberals in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, where almost anything goes and people of all colors, religions, and sexual preferences are celebrated.

On June 1, The Guardian wrote:

“An analysis of public records, local news reports and Guardian reporting found that 32% of black people killed by police in 2015 were unarmed, as were 25% of Hispanic and Latino people, compared with 15% of white people killed.”

Don’t get me started on the disgraceful Confederate flag issue. It took the murder of nine black churchgoers in Charleston to order South Carolina to take down its offensive Confederate flag — the utmost symbol of racism and slavery.

FAIR HOUSING FIGHTS STILL IN THE NEWS

One month ago, the Supreme Court endorsed a broad interpretation of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. They agreed with a Texas-based nonprofit corporation that the Department of Housing and Community Affairs and its officers had “caused continued segregated housing patterns by allocating too many tax credits to housing in predominantly black inner-city areas and too few in predominantly white suburban neighborhoods.”

The New York Times Wrote

After the Supreme Court’s decision June 25, The New York Times wrote:

“Much progress remains to be made in our nation’s continuing struggle against racial isolation,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the 5-to-4 ruling. “The court acknowledges the Fair Housing Act’s continuing role in moving the nation toward a more integrated society.”

SEE ALSO: A White Civil Rights Activist Looks Back on Martin Luther King March on Winnetka Village Green

I asked Mom about the past 2015 event in Chicago because I wanted to know how she felt about the tragedy that not enough has changed since the 1960s. She said, “The North Shore Summer Project opened a lot of people’s eyes to the unfairness of restricting communities on the basis of color or religion.”

Hate Mail

Mom said, “Although I received hate mail from some of my neighbors, the NSSP found that most residents in these northern suburbs were very willing to have nonwhite neighbors, and that it was the realtors who made, and acted on, other assumptions.” Concerned, I asked Mom if the hate mail had scared her. “Instead of frightening me, it inspired me to do more, since it let me know that my efforts and those of my fellow activists were being noticed,” she replied.

That’s rather impressive, don’t you think? Way to go, Mom!

When I asked if anything stands out in her mind about this 2015 event she said, “In one way it was dismaying that 50 years later, at this anniversary, we still needed to be reminded about the importance of fair housing, as in the stirring words of Hilary Shelton, the NAACP’s Washington [D.C.] director. He reminded the audience how crucial housing is in determining the schools children go to, the services residents can receive, and the building of personal assets throughout a lifetime. But,” she added, “the speakers acknowledged good news, too, like the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that building affordable housing in areas that perpetuate segregation is illegal, even if intent to do so cannot be shown. Our nation is making progress.”

In 1965, the Winnetka Historical Society wrote, “Dr. King’s appearance in Winnetka came at the end of a day of rallies in the Chicago area. Though hoarse and exhausted from five earlier speeches, Dr. King urged the crowd to ‘go all out to end segregation in housing.’

He asserted that ‘[e]very white person does great injury to his child if he allows that child to grow up in a world that is two-thirds colored and yet live in conditions where that child does not come into person-to-person contact with colored people.’ Dr. King criticized not only the ‘vitriolic words and violent actions of the bad people,’ but also ‘the silence of the good people.’ He observed: ‘We must now learn to live together as brothers, or we will perish together as fools.’”

Amen to that, Dr. King.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts or Donuts

Krispy Kreme doughnuts flooded my garden with the overwhelming smell of sugar and grease. So, I took it to The New York Times. Writer Anthony Ramirez did the accurate write-up. Thank you, Anthony!

***

Trivial Seque: I have two older sisters who were born early. I was three weeks late so my parents assumed I was a boy. The name they’d picked out was Anthony. Mom told me, “We were going to call you Tony.” When I popped out as a girl, I was named after my father’s mother. In Hebrew, my name means “a gift”

***

Okay, back to the saga of Krispy Kreme doughnuts or donuts, depending on how you like to spell them, brought unnecessary trouble.

Dorri Olds was interviewed by The New York Times. Olds was also featured on NY1-TV.

Neighborhood Report: Chelsea

by Anthony Ramirez

To their fans, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are to ordinary doughnuts what the Garden of Eden is to apple orchards. When the neon ”Hot Now” sign lights up, signaling that a fresh batch is emerging from the doughnut machine, passers-by crowd in and cars double-park out front.

Chelsea Gardens vs. Krispy Kreme

But to the residents of Chelsea Gardens, the apartment complex next door to the doughnut shop at 265 West 23d Street, living cheek by jowl to Krispy Kreme is anything but paradise. The constant whirring and clacking of Krispy Kreme’s air-conditioning and heating equipment disturbs sleep, residents say, because the shop bakes 24 hours a day.

Despite an exhaust vent that turns east, away from Chelsea Gardens, a strong westerly wind blows doughnut fumes toward the apartment complex.

Dorri Olds Challenges the Donut Makers

The doughnuts aren’t so great, either, claims one Chelsea Gardens resident. Dorri Olds, a graphic designer who works at home, has an apartment overlooking Krispy Kreme. “It’s the smell of oil, grease and sugar,” she said. ”I took a bite out of a Krispy Kreme and spit it out, it was so horrible, like a sponge dipped in grease.”

In the spring and summer, Olds said, the community garden is especially hard hit. ”Our tulips! Our chrysanthemums! Our crocuses!” she exclaimed. ”They smell of doughnuts!”

Edward C. Dew, 41, an architect whose apartment also faces Krispy Kreme, likes the doughnuts but is still disturbed. ”I loved them as a kid because I grew up in the South,” Mr. Dew said of Krispy Kreme, a franchised chain that is based in Winston-Salem, N.C. ”But this store is just driving me crazy.” He said he and other neighbors have been lobbying Krispy Kreme for changes since last July. He said he sold his co-op apartment to a neighbor because of the odor and noise and will move soon.

“The City Department of Environmental Protection has fined Krispy Kreme more than $1,000 for violations involving noise and odors.”
— the New York Times

New York City vs Krispy Kreme

The City Department of Environmental Protection has fined Krispy Kreme more than $1,000 for violations involving noise and odors. Howard Lev, a co-owner of the Krispy Kreme store, said he was trying to make adjustments. ”We’re not ignoring it,” he said. ”But it’s my fault that I don’t call the people at Chelsea Gardens every week to tell them what I’m doing.”

Mr. Lev said that when the weather warms, he plans to put more acoustic barriers around the rooftop equipment. He also said that he plans to ask Chelsea Gardens’ management for permission to route the shop’s exhaust along the wall of one of the apartment buildings so the odor is discharged on the roof.

***

Added by Dorri Olds: We chased ’em out. It was replaced by a Boston Market chicken chain that uses way too much salt. Thankfully, though, our garden was never attacked by a rancid waft from that franchise.

”That’s Howard,” Ms. Olds said. ”He keeps saying he will, but he doesn’t.”

City officials and the owners of Krispy Kreme are scheduled to speak with neighborhood residents on March 18 at a meeting with a committee of Community Board 4.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lev said that in addition to the Chelsea store, and one he has in Harlem, he plans to open stores in midtown, Greenwich Village and the Upper West Side. ANTHONY RAMIREZ

Barcelona is a top European destination for art and culture. The majority of tourists automatically look at the MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona) and consider Miro and Picasso as the giants of modern art, but many are not aware of the lesser-known and charming treats in the way of unique and unusual museums.

Quirky museums in Barcelona are found off the beaten track, along the charming side streets of the city. Many of the Barcelona luxury apartments are close to these special, lesser-known art-filled destinations. If you choose to pamper yourself and stay in these luxurious accommodations, why not take advantage of the opportunity to visit these hidden treasures that so few tourists are familiar with?

The best excursions are always those that are based on insider tips about the best local entertainment, activities and curiosities. Every gem listed below will be well worth your time. It is easy to add them to your itinerary no matter how tight your schedule may be.

Be sure to take tons of photos and videos. You will definitely want to document every single amazing sight that you experience during your visit to what’s considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You can share the pics and vids all over your social media. Your friends will get a contact high and be sure to thank you for turning them on to the following cultural treats.

El Rei de La Magia is Barcelona’s museum devoted to magic

Museu El Rei de La Magia

Do you love magic? Have you ever considered becoming a magician? If so, you’ll want to explore the fascinating history of magic. El Rei de La Magia is Barcelona’s gallery of enchanting tricks and posters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum also offers sleight of hand crowd-pleasers. Be sure to book reservations for magic shows well in advance as tickets disappear fast. Some shows are not in the English language but no worries. Words aren’t necessary to watch and be wowed.

Museu del Perfum

Museu del Perfum is a fascinating Barcelona attraction that even many locals don’t know about. In the Regia perfumery back room you can find 5,000 cosmetic flasks, scent bottles, and objects related to fragrance. You’ll receive access to a collection that is divided into two sections. The first collection displays unguent vases and essence jars, all meticulously displayed in chronological order, starting with black eye make-up tubes from Egypt, to Marie Antoinette’s double-flask pouch.

The second museum exhibition features perfumes from brands like Dior and Guerlain. Many are presented in rare bottles, including a Dali creation meant for Schiaparelli and a Vigny Paris flask. Recently, Museu del Perfum added a collection of perfumed boxes and powder bottles from the nineteenth century.

Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum

This cannabis museum houses an impressive collection of over 6,000 pieces. They are all related to cannabis plants and a multitude of derivatives. You will experience exhibits related to awe-inspiring ancient rituals and learn about the use of hash, marijuana and help used currently in modern medicine. You’ll be mesmerized by everything you about culture and cannabis. It’ll be a highlight of your trip!

Museu de L’Erotica

Museu de L’Erotica is close to the famed red-light district. You are going to be excited by the airbrushed paintings and Kama Sutra illustrations and unique exhibits of sculpted Victorian walking sticks, studded chastity belts, and other titillating treats. Rarities that you can feast your eyes on include detailed Japanese drawings, the “pleasure chair” of the past and brothel photos from the 1930s in Barrio Chino.

Barcelona’s Museu de Carrosses Funebres

Museu de Carrosses Funebres

The most obscure museum that Barcelona has to offer is the Museu de Carrosses Funebres. It is open Wednesday to Sunday and only in the mornings. Those who have a macabre side will not want to miss seeing the largest worldwide collection of hearses and funeral carriages that date back to the eighteenth century and all the way up to the 1950s.

Your visit will include Baroque ornate carriages, functional landaus and berlins, and a silver Buick that was used as a hearse. White carriages designed for virgins and children are close to mourning carriages for mistresses—to guarantee discretion through anonymity. Every carriage and hearse is manned by ghoulish-looking dummies clothed in period gear. Their creepy gaze adds to the thrilling chills of the spooky visit.

Museu de Cera

This museum is not quite at the level of Madame Tussauds but it is still worth the time. It’s a great addition to any rainy days that require a quick change in schedule. You’ll enjoy the time, while also keeping any young tot engaged and entertained at the “Underwater” section.

The Museu de Cera exhibits offer a mix of historical and modern characters. It’s an odd juxtaposition of composers from the nineteenth century near Star Wars characters. You’ll see ET, Lady Di, and more.

Museu de la Moto de Barcelona

This former convent, Sen Felipe Neri, is where you can see displays of motorbikes, including venerated relics. The design of the museum is also attention grabbing and displays will appeal to anyone—motorbike fanatics or not. Part of the exhibition belongs to Mario Soler, a reputable restaurateur and you can find many interesting classics, like Derbi, OSSA, Bultaco and Montesa. There is even a prized Villalbi.

Be daring and inquisitive in Barcelona. Check out these unusual artistic delights in one of the most beautiful and cultural cities in the world.

Want to Write Full-Time? Here’s what you need to know…

Love to write? Do you dream of leaving your office job for a full-time freelance writing career? Being a writer makes use of your creative side while keeping your mind sharp with challenges. There’s pride in making use of your problem-solving skills. Working for yourself can be the answer to hating a job riddled with office politics, gossip and cloying managers and there’s nothing worse than a helicopter boss hovering by your desk and just making you want to scream.

Don’t believe people who say it’s impossible to make a living as a freelance writer. Find freelance writers who support themselves. If they make enough money to pay their bills and add to their savings account, then why can’t you? The answer is you can.

A writer with a few steady “anchor clients,” can stop sweating over finances and get back to the enjoyment of writing.

As with any career, the joy can fizzle but that is always a choice left up to your expectations and attitude. Celebrity sports players can grow tired of the game. The passion they had at the beginning can be lost over time. That’s when they may feel trapped and resent their careers. We have all seen many stars who had it all but their lives spiral into depression anyway. Sports players, actors, musicians and yes, writers, can prevent burnout from happening by structuring their lives to say no to any gigs that are a bad fit for them.

Types of Writing Careers

Writing is a huge field with a wide variety of options. Sticking with the sports analogy, don’t choose baseball if you want to play tennis. According to Vin D’Eletto Jr. from his WordAgents Reviews, “the two most common types of writer that you might think of could be a novelist and a journalist.” But there is a variety of other job choices for writers that include ghostwriters, speech writers, scriptwriters, technical writers, freelance agency writers, and copywriters.”

The skills that you need for these jobs can vary wildly from sales and marketing experience to legal expertise to comedic talent. It is rare for one person to be skilled enough or capable of freelancing in all of these diverse areas of writing.

Freelance vs. Employed

Every working writer is faced with the choice of becoming freelance or employed. As an employee, you have the comfort and safety of a steady paycheck, employee benefits, and consistent work but you’re also limited by company guidelines and the preferences of an editor.

As a Freelancer You Can…

Enjoy more freedom

Pick and choose the work you want

Take time off when you need a break.

But you don’t want to be forced to ‘kill what you eat,’ meaning work harder or starve.

How to Make a Freelance Writing Career Worthwhile

Despite the rewards, many people leave the writing industry. Why?

Here are the most common reasons:

They chose roles that didn’t match their, skills, goals and personality

They never learned how to write a strong pitch

They did not meet deadlines

They had not taken even one course to hone their writing skills.

They were difficult to work with—argumentative, defensive, unprofessional

They handed in work that was filled with spelling and grammatical errors

They had no understanding of SEO and did not make use of keywords

They didn’t follow instructions

Daydreaming about life as a freelance novelist is not the same as the realities you will face as a freelancer. Writing from your experiences and crafting a book that will inspire emotions in your readers is a worthy goal but a tough road. To make enough money to live on—and especially if you wish to start a family, settle down, and have leisure time. For a secure income, working as an employee is a much better bet than sitting at home writing a novel that may never sell.

To make a career in writing worthwhile, you must find a better way than just kicking a can down the road, while you imagine a romanticized version of a writer’s life. To grab the reigns and succeed with a money-making freelance career, you need to think critically about what you want and what your skills are. Then you can make an educated choice on the type of writing role that’s right for you. Google the types of freelance writing that provide ongoing gigs. Maybe you’ll choose to pursue content marketing, ghost writing, editing, ghost editing, journalism for industries that have an ongoing need for writers. Think: science, finance, health, parenting, tech, or any topic that interests you. The list is almost endless.

That is the how for finding the path to steady work that is fulfilling and helps you go about the business of finding joy in your life.

On May 18 and 19 American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) will hold its 47th Annual Writers Conference in New York. Three dedicated cochairs: Carolyn Crist, Nancy Dunham, and myself have designed this conference with beginner, intermediate and advanced writers in mind. It is too easy for accomplished journalists, content writers, authors and writers in any genre to bypass conferences. But if you ask any veteran writer who has attended an ASJA conference—like me for example—you’ll understand why skipping it would be a major mistake. Every year I’ve attended, I land gigs and make back the money I spent and more. I’ve also made friends and learned so much. I owe my career to ASJA!

Learn to Earn at the ASJA Conference • May 18–19, 2018
Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in New York City

This year, you will experience a track dedicated solely to advanced writers. My role this year is Conference Chair for the Captivate Advanced Track. Through my years of experience I’ve learned the value of listening closely to speakers. They’ve told me exactly how to pitch them, what to read, how to submit articles to them. This year’s writers and editors are top of the crop. Wendy Helfenbaum is once again handling the Client Connections where ASJA members get face time to pitch their articles and books. It has worked every year for me!

This Year’s Conference Hashtag • #ASJANY18

Sessions for my “Captivate” track at the NY Writers Conference include:

FRIDAY • MAY 18 • MEMBERS-ONLY DAY

Polish Your Brand Workshop
I will kick off my first track by discussing your blog, social media, or website during this fun, interactive session. Plan to leave with the tools you need to boost your brand’s impact. (7:30–8 am)

The Big Book Project
ASJA President Sherry Paprocki, with authors Janine Latus, Milt Toby and Pat Ryan will talk about transitioning from journalism to writing books, including how to write proposals. (8–9 am)

Keynote Speaker Aimee Ross
This nationally celebrated educator and author (PERMANENT MARKER: A MEMOIR) is set to offer inspiration and lessons from her own successful career and writing journey (9–9:45 am)

Making Money in Your Sleep Passive Income for Writers
Damon Brown, Jeanette Hurt and Andrea King Collier will discuss the myriad ways to reharvest articles or adapt your skillset to make a better living off of work already completed. (10–11 am)

Editors Who Want Your Pitches
Wayne Hoffman, Tablet Magazine; Peter Catapano, The New York Times; Carolyn Malcoun, Senior Food Editor, EatingWell; and Lina Zeldovich, JSTOR Daily will discuss pitch Dos and Don’ts. Every editor has their pet peeves and preferences. The moderator (me!) will ask them to describe what they love and don’t love about pitches. This is a high-energy session (11:15 am–12:15 pm).

Beyond the Wall: Making the Leap
From Journalism to Content Marketing
Whether it’s called brand journalism or content marketing, companies need writers for blog posts, case studies, articles, video scripts. Agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and others seek writers with skills you’ve already honed as a journalist. Veteran journalists Christine Parizo and Court Stroud are ready to share the nuts-and-bolts moves that led to their success. Learn how to make it work for you. (2:15–3:30 pm)

Social Media: What’s Working and What Isn’t
Don’t miss Sree Sreenivasan, the most popular repeat speaker in ASJA conference history. This is an entertaining and interactive session to improve self-promotion, expand your audience and reach more career goals. Sree provides an astounding amount of cutting edge information and lets you know exactly where to go online to find what you need in the fastest way possible. (3:45–5:15 pm)

Stay tuned for more…
