Jumo Wants to Help Change the World

Jumo is a web startup with an ambitious global mission—to find, follow, and support those who work on trying to change the world. Jumo was launched by Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook. He left Facebook a while back to work as the Director of Online Organizing for the 2008 Obama campaign. But now Hughes is focused on the official launch of the new, free social network, Jumo. Hughes is striving to make it much easier online for people and causes to hook up. There have been previous attempts to bring social issues into the world of social networking. The biggest that comes to mind is Causes, a Facebook application that is popular among non-profits. “Causes does a good job of enabling people to either give some money or to raise money for a non-profit they already know about,” said Hughes. But to help make deeper connections—and more of a difference—will take a whole new freestanding site, Hughes said. You can go to the url but not much is happening yet. I’ll keep you posted on the developments as I learn them. I think it sounds very exciting.
