Olds News Includes Victimology Textbook

I am featured in this City University of New York (CUNY) textbook for a course on victimology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The title of the textbook is ESSENTIALS OF VICTIMOLOGY. This is the 9th book my writing is featured in and it’s my first textbook.

My 2012 New York Times essay Defriending My Rapist remains on this victimology course required reading list. Therefore, every semester, I speak to the students at CUNY’s Victimology classes. This year will be the 10th year that my essay remains on the reading list.

In Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), there is a saying, “No matter how far down the scale we have gone, our experience can benefit others.” Because of that, I share what my experiences keep teaching me. And that is gobs more productive than regretting my wayward past. Okay, now let’s get to the list of my writings in eight book anthologies.

Olds Book Anthologies

More book anthologies means more excitement. However, I still feel a rush that my writing has made it this far. And, I shall keep going. This week, I sent in a submission to another anthology. Of course, it depends on if my essay gets a yes or a no. Certainly, I’m crossing my fingers and toes and my ever-loyal pooch, Busta Rhymes, is crossing his four paws. Wish me luck.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts or Donuts

Krispy Kreme doughnuts flooded my garden with the overwhelming smell of sugar and grease. So, I took it to The New York Times. Writer Anthony Ramirez did the accurate write-up. Thank you, Anthony!

***

Trivial Seque: I have two older sisters who were born early. I was three weeks late so my parents assumed I was a boy. The name they’d picked out was Anthony. Mom told me, “We were going to call you Tony.” When I popped out as a girl, I was named after my father’s mother. In Hebrew, my name means “a gift”

***

Okay, back to the saga of Krispy Kreme doughnuts or donuts, depending on how you like to spell them, brought unnecessary trouble.

Dorri Olds was interviewed by The New York Times. Olds was also featured on NY1-TV.

Neighborhood Report: Chelsea

by Anthony Ramirez

To their fans, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are to ordinary doughnuts what the Garden of Eden is to apple orchards. When the neon ”Hot Now” sign lights up, signaling that a fresh batch is emerging from the doughnut machine, passers-by crowd in and cars double-park out front.

Chelsea Gardens vs. Krispy Kreme

But to the residents of Chelsea Gardens, the apartment complex next door to the doughnut shop at 265 West 23d Street, living cheek by jowl to Krispy Kreme is anything but paradise. The constant whirring and clacking of Krispy Kreme’s air-conditioning and heating equipment disturbs sleep, residents say, because the shop bakes 24 hours a day.

Despite an exhaust vent that turns east, away from Chelsea Gardens, a strong westerly wind blows doughnut fumes toward the apartment complex.

Dorri Olds Challenges the Donut Makers

The doughnuts aren’t so great, either, claims one Chelsea Gardens resident. Dorri Olds, a graphic designer who works at home, has an apartment overlooking Krispy Kreme. “It’s the smell of oil, grease and sugar,” she said. ”I took a bite out of a Krispy Kreme and spit it out, it was so horrible, like a sponge dipped in grease.”

In the spring and summer, Olds said, the community garden is especially hard hit. ”Our tulips! Our chrysanthemums! Our crocuses!” she exclaimed. ”They smell of doughnuts!”

Edward C. Dew, 41, an architect whose apartment also faces Krispy Kreme, likes the doughnuts but is still disturbed. ”I loved them as a kid because I grew up in the South,” Mr. Dew said of Krispy Kreme, a franchised chain that is based in Winston-Salem, N.C. ”But this store is just driving me crazy.” He said he and other neighbors have been lobbying Krispy Kreme for changes since last July. He said he sold his co-op apartment to a neighbor because of the odor and noise and will move soon.

“The City Department of Environmental Protection has fined Krispy Kreme more than $1,000 for violations involving noise and odors.”
— the New York Times

New York City vs Krispy Kreme

The City Department of Environmental Protection has fined Krispy Kreme more than $1,000 for violations involving noise and odors. Howard Lev, a co-owner of the Krispy Kreme store, said he was trying to make adjustments. ”We’re not ignoring it,” he said. ”But it’s my fault that I don’t call the people at Chelsea Gardens every week to tell them what I’m doing.”

Mr. Lev said that when the weather warms, he plans to put more acoustic barriers around the rooftop equipment. He also said that he plans to ask Chelsea Gardens’ management for permission to route the shop’s exhaust along the wall of one of the apartment buildings so the odor is discharged on the roof.

***

Added by Dorri Olds: We chased ’em out. It was replaced by a Boston Market chicken chain that uses way too much salt. Thankfully, though, our garden was never attacked by a rancid waft from that franchise.

”That’s Howard,” Ms. Olds said. ”He keeps saying he will, but he doesn’t.”

City officials and the owners of Krispy Kreme are scheduled to speak with neighborhood residents on March 18 at a meeting with a committee of Community Board 4.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lev said that in addition to the Chelsea store, and one he has in Harlem, he plans to open stores in midtown, Greenwich Village and the Upper West Side. ANTHONY RAMIREZ

SAVE THE DATE! May 18–19, 2018
ASJA’s 47th Annual Writers Conference

Note: The 2018 conference will be held at a new venue this year: Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, 811 7th Avenue at West 53rd Street, New York City. The conference Members Day is May 18 and the Open Day is May 19.
I am excited to be taking this work on! My dad always said, “If you want something done, give it to the busiest person and they’ll get it done.” ASJA is filled with hard-working freelance writers who are accustomed to nutty deadlines and being adept at multi-tasking. I’m honored to be part of this amazing team led by ASJA president Sherry Beck Paprocki.
I am thrilled — absolutely gleeful — that my proposal for the conference theme has been chosen! It is based on the three tracks: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
The 2018 theme is:

Navigate, Motivate, Captivate

I will be serving as the Advanced Track chair. It is an honor to have been chosen. ASJA has helped me find success as a full-time freelance writer. I work in my home office with my beloved dog Buddy James at my feet. Thank you, ASJA!

We Are Seeking Conference Panel Proposals • Deadline is Nov 10th

The NYC Conference’s theme for 2018 is Navigate, Motivate, Captivate. This year, we’re featuring three tracks for beginners, mid-career writers and advanced storytelling techniques.
We are currently soliciting proposals for panels and workshops that will inspire, motivate and empower journalists, nonfiction and literary nonfiction writers at all stages of their careers. Emphasis will be put on professional development as it relates to these three tracks of freelance writing, such as workshops on pitching, making new career moves, finding increased income, querying book agents, and publishing in all aspects such as books and magazines.
What We Are Looking For In a Session Proposal
We prefer workshops that focus on craft and those with a “how-to” aspect. We want single session leaders who are experts in their field and savvy in social media. We’re seeking panels that offer real service to our attendees. In particular, we’re looking for diversity in panelists — racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, age, gender identity, marital and parental status.
If you’re interested in speaking, please complete this form.
Please note that we are unable to offer monetary compensation for travel or presenting. All participants must be available during the entire two days of the conference, May 18 and May 19, as scheduling will be at the discretion of the conference committee.
Deadline: November 10, 5:00 pm ET

Writers: If you are interested in joining ASJA…

Visit the Society’s website:
• About ASJA
• Who is Eligible to Join
• Member Benefits
And, if you do decide to join, please mention that you heard about ASJA from me! I’ll be much obliged.

Track Chair Bios

Carolyn Crist, a freelance journalist with stories that have appeared in AARP, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Magazine, Anesthesiology News, Reuters, Tales of the Cocktail, U.S. News & World Report and WIRED. She is also an adjunct journalism professor (of convergence journalism, photojournalism and travel writing) at the University of Georgia and co-owner of Pixel & Ink Studio in Athens, Georgia.
Nancy Dunham is a freelance writer whose clients include People magazine, AARP, Automotive News, USA Today, MoneyTalksNews/MSN, Woman’s World, A&E Real Crime blog and other national publications. Dunham was a newspaper reporter, magazine editor and publisher. She is also a founding board member of the Association of Healthcare Journalists and lives in Alexandria, Va.
Dorri Olds is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in book anthologies, newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Marie Claire, Woman’s Day and The Forward. Her social media following includes over a million views on YouTube. As a full-time freelancer she divides her time between writing personal essays, pop culture articles, service pieces, movie reviews and interviewing A-List celebrities. She is currently working on a book about misogyny and rape culture.
“ASJA is so fortunate to have these prolific writers agree to work together to make this upcoming conference one of the most relevant conferences available to freelance writers and authors in the industry,” says ASJA President Sherry Beck Paprocki. “As ASJA moves to a new conference venue next spring, the tri-chairs promise to deliver important content for all writers—whether they are just starting out in the profession or they have long-time writing experience. We are looking forward to the months of planning that will create a must-attend conference next spring.”

Here is one of my personal ASJA Success Stories:
ASJA is so worth the cost of membership. Every year that I attend the annual conference in New York City, I make back much more money than I spent. Last year, during speed pitches, I met the lovely Woman’s Day editor, Maria Carter. We hit it off immediately. She has published three of my personal essays and is a dream to work with. Thank you, ASJA!

American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) Annual Writers Conference • Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan
45 East 45th Street at Madison Avenue

Saturday, May 6 • Day 2

I will be on two panels this year at the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) annual writers conference. The first is on Friday, May 5 at 2:45. Its topic is “Using Smartphones To Tell Stories.” My second panel will be on Saturday, May 6. It’s titled “Tackling Tough Topics.”

ALSO SEE MY FRIDAY, MAY 5 PANEL: “USING SMART PHONES TO TELL STORIES”

In this workshop, moderated by ASJA member Candy Arrington with panelists Dorri Olds, Rudri Patel and Sharon Van Epps, writers will learn methods to craft tough topics through the power of story. We will be providing practical suggestions for coping and moving forward, and writing with a level of transparency that touches hearts and inspires hope.

Though many writers feel compelled to write about a difficult life circumstance, loss, or grief, it’s important to know how to structure content, what to include and what to omit. In writing tough topics, you have the opportunity to reach those who are hurting, feel alienated and alone, and are searching for ways to heal their pain. No matter what the situation, there are common threads that reach across gender, cultural, and ethical barriers to foster hope and healing.

Excerpt from my essay:

Facebook suggested I friend him. I guess our social networks overlapped. I guided the mouse toward his photo, and the little pointed hand hovered over his face. Fear and anger swelled up but curiosity won out and I clicked “Add Friend.” He accepted within minutes. Stunned, I wondered if he had forgotten raping me, or if he thought I had.

At 13, I was a lonely upper-middle-class Jewish nerd living on Long Island, in search of a tougher persona. He was part of an edgy crowd that hung out in a parking lot behind the school, sprawling over the cement steps like bored cats on a sofa. It was 1973, and the boys wore black leather jackets, smoked Marlboros and stashed pints of Tango and Thunderbird in their back pockets. One afternoon, making sure my long brown hair covered the blemish on my cheek, I went over and said, “Hi.”

That was really all it took. A few offered nods. One of the girls asked if I wanted to come out with them that night to the cemetery.

Jimi Hendrix

I woke up to a Facebook post about Jimi Hendrix from a hometown friend. Hendrix was my idol. It was to an excessive degree. I was a teenager in the mid-1970s. So, Jimi was already dead by the time I’d heard of him.

Today, I’m sharing the contents of my teenage bedroom’s most cherished items.

Jimi Hendrix Posters

Jimi Hendrix Posters

The coolest Jimi Hendrix poster I had was Jimi with wires coming out of his head. I googled it so I could display it here for your viewing pleasure.

After finding that image I closed my eyes and pictured my pink room and cork-board wall. Thank you Dad for painting* my room and putting up that wall of cork board.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant

My plea was for a room painted entirely hot pink. But, Dad was measured, more moderate. He broke the news to me gently, though. Only one wall would be fuschia. “Believe me, honey,” Dad said with conviction. “It’s too much. It’ll look like a bordeaux.” I had no idea what that word meant but, the way he’d said it, sounded really bad.

Lava Lamp

It was Dad’s idea to put up a cork-board from floor to ceiling on one wall. I was thrilled and quickly covered it with my art and posters. I was a devoted Led Zeppelin fan, so this black and white Jimmy Page and Robert Plant photo was one of the earlier additions. Later, I added a Yes poster — not so much because the band meant much to me, I just loved that poster. The Yes poster’s colors coordinated perfectly with my teal lava lamp. And it all came together with my beloved yellow beanbag chair.

Lava Light & Beanbag Chair

Yellow Beanbag Chair

Much of my youth was spent in that room drawing , writing, and blasting music. My typical spot was seated in the bright yellow beanbag chair, with my beagle beside me, paper all around me of drawings and writings — some crumpled up, but most saved.

Box of Journals

Update: During the pandemic, I’ve been doing my Spring cleaning since last April. I finally dealt with the ancient, misshapen, torn and tattered box in a closet that held my journals from third grade to the present. I arranged them neatly into a file cabinet. The drawers are marked 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and I just finished the 2020s.

I had to throw out gobs of other hazarai to make room. That frayed box was witness to extreme teenage rebellion, shameless hedonism, tortured angst, and psychedelic creativity. I love that I can back-up my stories. I’m so glad I kept those. Mom, Sally Wendkos Olds, thank you for giving me that wonderful first diary in third grade. You told me to try to write in it every day as a record of what I did. Thank you for those wise words, Mom. xoxo

The YES poster

Jimi Hendrix Songs

Getting back to music, not all of my albums had printed lyrics. When words weren’t typed on the record cover or inside sheet, my solution was to play songs over and over until I could make out the words, then commit them to memory.

That create a couple of scratches. Thankfully, only a couple were bad enough to make the needle skip. However, it was worth all of the time spent. I can still recite songs from my “yoot” verbatim.” I hated when I had to ask for help. One of Elton John’s songs had me perplexed. “Hey, Jenny,” I said to my sister. “Where are the streets of Perolone?”

“Huh?” she said glancing up.

“You know, in ‘Rocketman,’ I said, “it says, ‘burning up the streets of Perolone.’ Is that a country?”

Jenny laughed uncontrollably. When she could finally speak she said, “There’s no country named Perolone. It’s ‘burning up the streets up here alone.'” Then she lost it again, laughing so hard her nostrils were flaring.

I didn’t love those exchanges. Hence, I became more devoted to deciphering the songs. When I got jammed up, I lifted the needle off the record and put it back until I could figure out the words and phrases. Many hours went into this. When I hit an impossible snag with Neil Young’s “For Dad in Ohio,” my sister Nancy came to the rescue. She explained what happened at Kent State.

The morning is dead
And the day is, too
There’s nothing left here to meet me
But the velvet moon
All my loneliness I have felt today
It’s like a little more than enough
To make a man throw himself away

And I continue
To burn the midnight lamp
Alone

Now the smiling portrait of you
Is still hangin’ on my frowning wall
It really doesn’t, really doesn’t bother me too much at all
It’s just the ever falling dust
That makes it so hard for me to see
That forgotten earring layin’ on the floor
Facing coldly towards the door

I continue
To burn the midnight lamp
Lord, alone

Loneliness is such a drag

So here I sit to face
That same old fire place
Gettin’ ready for the same old explosion
Goin’ through my mind
And soon enough time will tell,
About the circus in the wishing well
And someone who will buy and sell for me
Someone to toll my bell

And I continue
To burn this old lamp
Lord, alone
Darlin’ can’t ya hear me callin’ you?
So lonely
Gonna have to blow my mind
Lonely

Long before Photoshop, I created this photograph of Jimi Hendrix and me. I cut out a photo of myself. Placed it on an album cover. Then surrounded it with a cool rainbow-colored hippie scarf I found in a thrift store.

One of my great achievements in lyrical memorization was Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. That was no easy song to learn and yes, I can still recite it straight through. Not everyone can say that. Amirite?

One of my greatest achievements at memorization was Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. That was no easy song to learn and yes, I can still recite it straight through. Not everybody can claim such a miraculous thing (see lyrics pasted in below).

Johnny’s in the basement, mixing up the medicine
I’m on the pavement, thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat, badge out, laid off
Says “He’s got a bad cough, wants to get it paid off”

Look out kid, it’s somethin’ you did
God knows when but you’re doin’ it again
You better duck down the alley way, lookin’ for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap, in the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills, you only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot face full of black soot
Talkin’ that the heat put, plants in the bed but
The phone’s tapped anyway, Maggie says that many say
“They must bust in early May, orders from the D.A”

Look out kid, don’t matter what you did
But walk on your tip toes don’t tie no bows
Better stay away from those that carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose, watch the plain clothes
You don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind blows

ASJA 2015 Conference: Connect for Success at the Roosevelt Hotel (map)
May 1, 2015 • 11AM – 12:15PM

Use Social Media to Land Writing Gigs and Make Money (session: F06)

Most hard-working professionals feel like there’s never enough time in a day. Between deadlines, creative pursuits, and trying to have a life, who has time to blog, update their website and keep up with social media?

In this session you will learn how to use your time efficiently to get the best results. You will be given tips and tricks based on hard-won experience. We’ll talk about the best tools to use for your specific goals and how to stand out online amidst worldwide competition.

You’ll learn about improving your website, blogs, and social media accounts. Find out the different language and etiquette for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, Reddit, Google+ and YouTube. And, most importantly, you’ll learn how to use social media to make more money.

Dorri Olds, panel organizer, speaker and ASJA member • www.DorriOlds.com • @DorriOlds

Here are some of my social media stats (as of April 10, 2015): YouTube: 470,000 views (yes, that’s almost half a million!); Twitter: 33,5 followers; Facebook: 4,000 (likes and followers). My areas of expertise include freelance writing, social media marketing, web design and WordPress. I will discuss:

Social Media Etiquette and the differences across platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube).
Yes, there is a difference.

Tips and Tricks: How to use your time efficiently and get the best results. Groups, hashtags, comments, blogging, linking, networking and the way money streams come my way all the time.

How I’ve landed writing gigs through social media

What to do and what NOT to do

Most Important Rule: Do not scream, “Look at me! Look at me!” Instead, pay attention to the people you want to connect with. Most editors are writers too. Google them, read some of their articles, compliment them. Share their posts and tag them, retweet their tweets, leave comments on their LinkedIn posts. That is the best way to introduce yourself. One of the biggest mistakes I see writers make is to contact me on Facebook or Twitter and tell me what book they wrote and to please like their page. It’s annoying that they introduced themselves by asking me to take time out of my swamped schedule to do something for them. Why would anybody want to stop what they’re doing for a complete stranger? But! If they’ve commented on my articles or shared my Facebook posts and retweeted my tweets, I will notice them and there’s an excellent chance that I’ll remember them and want to respond. That is how the best connections begin.

MEET MY WONDERFUL SPEAKERS:

Kirsten Koza, author, humorist, journalist and editor www.kirstenkoza.com • @KirstenKoza

Kirsten says: I will discuss Facebook Pages and how to target the right followers and attract publishers. Attend this panel discussion and you could win a waterproof, shockproof Nikon camera and memory card as part of a demonstration on how to quickly grow a Facebook Page of ideal followers using simple techniques such as raffles.

This editor admits it: I just finished reading thousands of stories to make my selection of 30 for a Travelers’ Tales anthology, and at times the writer’s social networking reach was a factor in my decision making process. Of course the story still has to be great, but if it comes down to a tie breaker and one writer has an audience of followers through social networking and I know they’re going to promote their work, then that will sway my choice. Publishers want their stories to be read. The writer is part of that process.

Hot Tips:

Facebook Pages have improved how you can target followers. But you still need to avoid click farms.
See this video re click farms which are sometimes called the sweatshops of social media: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVfHeWTKjag.Avoiding fake accounts LIKING your page can be done easily by selecting the countries you target. You can also select specific interests and hobbies when attracting new followers, or when promoting a story or book.

If someone follows your page and you suspect they are a fake account, delete them. Facebook sends your posts out to a certain percentage of your followers and you want those followers to be real.

Keep your page interesting and alive. Find your angle. Share material that benefits not just you but your followers.

Be generous to other writers on your Page and they’ll promote you on theirs.

You don’t know when a story is going to go viral but you can help spread it with a catchy teaser and social networking. And, yes, it is possible to be your own pimp without looking like one by following step 3.

I have 8,600 targeted followers on my Writers’ Expeditions Facebook Page. They consist of travelers, writers, editors and photographers. Through these 8,600 I can reach 100,000. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with you.

Tom Miller, Literary Agent, Greenburger • @ThomasWMiller

As an agent, I particularly look for writers who have substantial presences on Twitter and LinkedIn. If an author has 5,000 or more Twitter followers, and if he or she tweets interesting and on-point tweets 2–3 times a day, I take notice. So do publishers — believe me! I also notice an author who has a well-populated and impressive LinkedIn page. I’m not particularly impressed when an author says, “I have 1,000+ Facebook friends” about her or his FB personal page (nor are publishers), but I do notice when an author has an active and well-populated FB fan page with a lot of interactivity on it.

Join Twitter and tweet about your writing 2–3 times a day. Follow writers you admire and retweet salient tweets from them. Use hashtags judiciously and strategically.

Start a Facebook fan page for your writing. Invite the friends you think will respond and who can share your posts to their friends and contacts. It’s a matter of getting as many people engaged about your writing as possible.

On LinkedIn, it’s actually OK to send LinkedIn invitations to people you want to connect with even if you don’t know them personally. Just don’t hound those people relentlessly or send them inappropriate messages. Upgrade to LinkedIn Premium if you want extra benefits.

Nikki M. Mascali, Editor in Chief, TheBlot Magazine • @NikkiMMascali

My areas of expertise are editing, writing, setting editorial calendars and hiring and working with freelancers. I’ll focus on:

Branding yourself as a journalist
You could have the perfect pitch that leads to the perfect story, but does any of it matter if no one sees it? Social media gives writers the tools they need to freely reach out to people with similar interests in an effort to self-promote their work and those at their respective outlets.

Does the initial size of your social reach matter?
Not necessarily. Sure, I want a writer that has tens of thousands of followers because, let’s face it, we’re all gunning for clicks, but one of the main things I look for as an editor is diligence in cultivating a social presence. As a writer’s body of work grows, so will their following across social media platforms — so long as they continue to seek out new ways to gain valued viewership.

The king of self promotion for writers
Twitter, by far, is the most valuable tool, especially for digital edition stories. Its forced use of the 140-character format is helping to establish a new breed of headline writers looking to instantly capture an audience. In fact, I credit my Twitter activity in the site’s early days for helping me become a more concise writer and editor.

The worldwide pitch generator
With so many voices spanning the web, digital media is not only a prominent way to promote your work, but to expand on it as well. Use social media as a springboard for story ideas by following subjects that you are interested in. Although most of your legwork will consist of fact checking, there is no other time in history that news can break faster than today’s digital age. I love getting a pitch from someone minutes after I saw that topic trending on social media.

Reaching Sources
Now that you have an idea on how to find, write and promote your story through social media outlets, you can start on expanding those articles using the same media. Sure you may have to still deal with publicists and agents, both of which could put speed bumps on the completion of your projects, but people of interest are commonly reachable through their social media channels. Don’t hesitate to reach out to potential sources directly — it may be the difference between your latest scoop and yesterday’s news.

Jason Gross, Social Media Manager, TheBlot Magazine, journalist and author • @jgrossnas

My area of expertise is marketing, promotion and branding. The points I will focus on are:

Remember that social media platforms have a long memory and that employers (including publishing companies, agents) might search your accounts to see what kind of things you post there. What you say there can stay there, even if you delete it. The rule of thumb is: “Don’t say anything there you wouldn’t say in front of your mom.”

Choose the social media platforms that are right for your needs and don’t over-extend yourself there. Usually good to pick 3–4 places to concentrate on.

Arguments and disagreements on social media are fine. Flame wars are bad because they make you look bad even if you’re right.

You don’t have to be a social media expert but it helps to keep up on the newest features on SM platforms so you can use them to your advantage. Some good sources for this are Mediabistro Social Media Newsfeed, Mashable’s Apps/Software and Adweek’s Social Times
