Here is one of her brilliant tweets that went viral.

During the last round of trollgate, people said that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I’m too ugly. So I’d just like to commemorate the occasion with these 3 selfies… ????

Years ago, Blake wrote to me after seeing my New York Times essay about teen rape. Her kind words gave me comfort and she shared parts of her life with me. Although our experiences weren’t the same, we bonded over surviving trauma and a shared mission to help others.

I have experienced Blake’s kindness firsthand. We met when Blake reached out to me after reading my essay Defriending My Rapist which was published in The New York Times.

Centennial Cats

Blake said yes to an interview for my recent assignment for Centennial Animals, a sub-division of Centennial Media. Inside Your Cat’s Mind is a popular magazine series. I did a deep dive into why cats are not officially-approved service animals. Despite the myth that cats aren’t trainable, of course, they are. Just ask a cat trainer!

Cat Trainer Melissa Millet

Dr. Melissa Millet, one of Hollywood’s go-to animal trainers, rescued five cats. She then trained them to star on the silver screen. As a result, her five cats are cast members in the remake of Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary.” These kitties knew nothing about acting until Millet trained them.

Her secret? Patience and kindness. The five furry critters went from non-actors to reaching the top of the crop as cat stars in a major motion picture. As a true-blue animal lover, Millet fights for the rights of animals. Her requirements include supervisors hired to be on set in order to ensure humane treatment. Trainer Millet will never have it any other way.

My cats are trained to do fun tasks like riding a scooter, balancing in a sit pretty on my head, hitting a mark on cue. For these tasks, my cats are actually more reliable and more intelligent than my dogs!
Animal trainer Melissa Millet

Back to Blake

Cat lovers like Blake don’t need a certificate to prove heroism in their felines. However, not every residence permits dogs on their premises. And, there are licensed service animals, for example, miniature-horses, that are turned away. Yet, landlords are often agreeable to four-legged feline family members. So, yeah, trained cats have not yet earned their rightful title: “Official Service Animals. Hopefully, that will change in the near future.

“Harry gave us so much love when we needed it most,” Blake tells me. “We gave Harry a home thinking that we were saving him. But instead, Harry saved us.”
Melissa Blake

Wild About Harry

Blake’s first cat Harry came into her life at a crucial time. It was after her father’s suicide. Sisters Melissa and Joy, and their mother, grappling with grief. “Harry gave us so much love when we needed it most,” said Blake. “We gave Harry a home, thinking that we were saving him. But instead, Harry saved us.”

Blake was born with a rare genetic bone and muscular disorder called Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. After Harry lived a long, full life, the family met two more life-saving cats named Whitney and Stella. “They are precious creatures,” says Blake. “They always remind me to slow down. When I am anxious or depressed, just petting them for even a minute calms me. They have a soothing, loving presence. It is so peaceful.”

And, Blake says, “One of the things I’ve found most interesting, is that none of our cats have been afraid of my wheelchair. Whitney loves sitting in my seat and it reminds me how accepting cats are. Cats never fail to make me smile. They lift my mood.”

Ok folks, I’ll leave you with this #WednesdayBrag

Happy Halloween … Boo!

I first heard of addiction horror through Michele Weinstat Miller. I wrote about her first two books, “The Thirteenth Step: Zombie Recovery” and “Widow-In-Law,” for The Fix—the largest addiction and recovery website. She introduced me to author Mark Matthews who also writes in the genre of addiction horror. I interviewed him for my latest article “Halloween Special: Tales of Addiction.” his new anthology, Lullabies for Suffering: Tales of Addiction Horror.

Mark Matthews spent years fighting the insatiable monster that screams for more. He says that he still dreams about the electricity of cocaine, the soothing caress of heroin, the heaven in a bottle of Stoli vodka. But the party for him ended long ago. By age 23, Matthews was a wreck. He had alcoholic hepatitis of the liver, swollen pancreas, and a bleeding stomach.

The Fix article begins with my favorite Matthews quote:

There is nothing more diabolical than the voice of addiction hijacking thoughts, rationalizing atrocious behavior.

After several failed detoxes, Matthews still didn’t wanna go to rehab, no, no, no. But at last he hit bottom and crawled into residential treatment. Getting sober was excruciating, yet rewarding. Equipped with his new recovery tools, he learned to manage life without killing himself. He returned to college and earned a Masters in Counseling and a BA in English.

Matthews put me in touch with: Caroline Kepnes, whose story, “Monsters” is an exquisite contribution to Lullabies for Suffering. You may already know her name. She is the bestselling author of YOU, which became the binge-worthy Netflix series. Horror master Stephen King tweeted about YOU, calling it “Hypnotic and scary. A little Ira Levin, a little Patricia Highsmith, and plenty of serious snark.”

The four additional contributors to Lullabies for Suffering are: Gabino Iglesias, Kealan Patrick Burke, John FD Taff and Mercedes M. Yardley.

This month’s issue of the NY Resident magazine will be available Wednesday or Thursday of this week! In it will be my book reviews of Emily Rubin’s Stalina and Kiri Blakeley’s Can’t Think Straight and an article about fun things to do in April in NYC including Passover and Easter activities. May will be a busy month for me too. I’ll write 3 book reviews/author profiles about Molly Jong-Fast, Mindy Greenstein and Steven Petrow. June a new magazine is coming out (I’m not giving its title away yet!). The debut of that publication will include an article about Dr. Todd Sinett, the best chiropractor in NYC! I’m racing thru life. Today I must take it easy. I’ve run myself so ragged I’ve caught a cold. But I got ants in my pants to work on all of my design work, writing, editing and social media stuff. Sigh… Never enough time in a day!

My work world has been a wonderful whirlwind for ages. But it’s time I took a breath and focused on my own blog for a minute! The first week of May my new Resident magazine articles will become available. They are 2011 Great Reads: Can’t Think Straight: A Memoir of Mixed-Up Love (Citadel Press) by author Kiri Blakeley and Stalina (AmazonEncore) by author Emily Rubin; and New York City April 2011 Events including celebrations of Easter and Passover.

In the first week of June more new articles will become available. Yup, told you I’ve been busy. Those pieces are about author Mindy Greenstein and her new collection of personal essays titled The House at Crash Corner, Molly Jong-Fast and her new novel The Social Climber’s Handbook, and Steven Petrow‘s Complete Gay & Lesbian Manners For Every Occasion. Also to come is a feature length piece on Dr. Todd Sinett, an unusual chiropractor and his unconventional and highly effective practice that focuses on healing beyond the symptoms but learning to prevent back problems. He is author of the book The Truth About Back Pain.

My upcomiong travel piece will follow my late June trip to a luxury Marriott Hotel in Cancun, Mexico.
