You’ve got the mumps, LOL 🙂

Okay, so you’re never going to get a text like that from your doctor. If you do, run and find a new doc.

But smart healthcare providers are catching on to interacting with their patients via smartphones (sans emoticons).

Modern medicine is just beginning to catch up to tech and figure out how SMS can be another tool to help patients. While the healthcare industry must adhere to additional electronic privacy rules along with standard anti-spam and proper marketing regulations that everyone else must follow, providers and their staff can still find smart ways to utilize texting.

Examples

Appointment reminders. Instead of a card in the mail or a courtesy phone call, your provider’s office can send texts confirming an upcoming visit, or an automated text once a year for a check-up. Texts to doctors can also help them remember their own appointments.

Seeking Advice. As long as the patient’s identity is protected, doctors can seek advice from other peers or specialists. Physician A’s texts can also get right through to Physician B, rather than going through the phone system and leaving a message, or sending an email that may get lost among the hundreds of others that doctors typically receive.

Better adherence. A British study showed that patients who had regular text reminders from their providers were less likely to forget to take their medication or the wrong quantity. A group of 303 patients being treated for heart or blood pressure problems were divided into groups that received SMS notifications versus another group that didn’t. The texts were sent daily for the first two weeks, then every other day for two weeks, then weekly for five months. The study found that 25 percent of the “non-text” group didn’t complete the prescription, compared to 9 percent of the “text” group. This type of active texting could potentially lead to better prescription management — such as less waste, and better outcomes, i.e., if a patient doesn’t comply with a prescription or a recommended medical plan, they’ll increase the odds of suffering future problems like heart attacks.

Better interaction with pharmacies. If a pharmacy has “just a little question for the doctor” it might take hours for the provider to receive a phone message but a quick text can lead to quick communication and a fast response.

Provide accurate information. Doctors often discourage patients from research their problems online research and self diagnosing. So much of the information available on the Internet is questionable, wrong, and even dangerous. A study in the Journal of Medical internet Research showed that patients and doctors are both aware of some of the credibility concerns of certain sites, and suggests that improved communication between patient and provider can reduce anxiety and confusion. An SMS environment may not prove the best place to debate pros and cons of technical studies but a doctor or doctor’s office can text a patient reliable web links to accurate information — including the doctor’s website — and invite the patient to make an appointment for further discussion.

Quick interactions. Many doctors and nurses would love nothing better than to spend more time with every patient but the reality of the current industry is that giving extra time for one patient means less time or delays for the next patient. Texting is a time-efficient way for a doctor and doctor’s staff to provide quick answers to patients with basic questions that may not necessitate an appointment.

Bottom Line

Texting can be a useful tool for physicians to communicate accurate information, maximize time management and improve patient relations.

Use Social Media to Land Writing Gigs and Make Money (session: F06)
Do you not “get” how to use social media to make more money? Writers are pressured by editors, publishers and agents to build an online platform. Have you missed out on work because you don’t know the tips and tricks to build a better following — or even where to begin? This accomplished team of five, which includes writers, editors, social media managers, marketing and branding experts, a webmaster and a literary agent, will give you what you need to succeed.
Most ASJA writers are busy hard-working professionals who feel like there’s never enough time in a day. Between deadlines, creative pursuits, researching, and submitting pitches, who has time to blog, update their website and keep up with social media?
In this session you will learn how to use your time efficiently to get the best results. You will be given tips and tricks based on hard-won experience. We’ll talk about the best tools to use for your specific goals and how to stand out online amidst worldwide competition.
You’ll learn about improving your website, blogs, and social media accounts. Find out the different language and etiquette for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, Google+ and YouTube. And, most importantly, you’ll learn how to use social media to make more money.
According to research from a Harvard Business Review Analytics report, 58% of companies are engaged in social media networks like Facebook, microblogs like Twitter, and sharing multimedia on platforms such as YouTube but much of the investment in social media is future-oriented.
Business are opening accounts but not sure how to put together successful social media campaigns. They want to build their brand online and increase sales but they don’t seem to be using all of the analytics tools available and all of the social media strategies that are out there.
Social media “all-stars” engage beyond the tired method of “shout marketing,” by using social media more often to promote their brand, monitor what’s going on with potential customers, esearch new product ideas and keeping up with the everchanging technology landscape.
I can tell you from years of experience, businesses that succeed don’t say things like, “I don’t have time for social media,” or “I just don’t get Twitter.” They hire someone who knows the ins and outs of social media marketing and branding online.
If you are at a stand still and unsure of how best to use social media to market your business online, you can benefit greatly by learning tips and tricks from a marketing consultant. I’m here. Let me know if I can help!
To quote ol’ F. Scott Fitzgerald, this is “the best of times.” Tom Wolfe got a cool $7 mill for his last novel. For those of us nowhere near that level, there are more options than ever including self-publishing (no longer a dirty word) and e-books. But wait, there’s more. Right now, the essay has never been more in demand. Due to the Internet—remember that means worldwide web—writers do have more competition but they also have like a zillion more options to sell their work. According to Marche’s research, publishers are making money, too. “Revenue for adult hardcover books is up 8.3 percent from 2011, and paperback sales are up 5.2 percent. Book sales for young adults and children grew by 12 percent last year. E-books accounted for 30 percent of net publisher sales in the adult fiction category in 2011, compared with 13 percent in 2010…. In addition to those happy numbers, the e-reader is creating a new market, not destroying an old one.” If one more kvetching writer tells you publishing is dead, books are dying or nobody is reading, tell them to Google the stats. Forecasts say tablets will reach 112.5 million consumers by 2016 (Forrester, March 6, 2012). I’d say that’s a lot of peops still reading what writers write.

* * *

“Reasons to Re-Joyce” is an appealing essay written by Darin Strauss (Sunday Book Review, The New York Times, December 9, 2012). Not only did Strauss mock the hand-wringing world of whiners moaning about the death of literary fiction, he states, “The naysaying misses the fact that this has been a wildly good book year.” Oh, and by the way, you can trust Strauss has his finger on the right pulse — his most recent book, a memoir titled Half a Life, won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The title of this essay is a reference to Ulysses by James Joyce. Strauss claims the novel is still relevant and a strong influence on what he calls a recent slew of “legitimate masterpieces.” Strauss also makes an excellent point that many of the doom and gloom analyses of the so-called downturn in book sales is not based on actual numbers: “It would be one thing if the naysayers were talking about a crash dive of sales figures. Sales figures carry the inarguability of math.” Instead, he argues, the public is under a barrage of nothing more than negative uniformed opinions from glass half empty talking heads. So, rejoice writers and keep writing your books. Readers are still reading.

* * *

“A Strong Author Platform Translates into Book Sales” reports DBW (Digital Book Wire, December 6, 2012). This is an article promoting the Digital Book World Conference & Expo in New York that is taking place January 15–17, 2013. No doubt the recap will offer sound advice for and analyses of the current state of digital book sales. This conference offers trade publishers hard data on today’s and tomorrow’s book biz. The conference refers to itself as “the single largest gathering of senior-level digital publishing execs anywhere.” It promises attendees access to presidents, CEOs, editors, marketers, large and small publishers, agents, authors, booksellers, librarians and techies — in other words, everyone you need to know to manage your success in the digital publishing world. Topics will include the power of social media and how to determine your best strategy from a dizzying array of platforms including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Pinterest and YouTube. Speakers will cover how to generate media buzz, how to use search engine optimization (SEO) to rise to higher heights in Google searches and the necessity of 365-day marketing strategies to measure the success of your efforts. So, if you are one of those writers who has been reluctant to spruce up your website or blog, and take the plunge into social media conversations on Twitter and Facebook, there is so much more you can be doing to create your own writing success. Run, don’t walk, to social media marketing.

The best website design, internet marketing, print marketing uses the psychology of color. A talented skillful web designer understands the power of red, black and white and the emotions conveyed by blue, green, pink, etc.

It is not news that color evokes powerful emotions. Countless studies have deduced that people react to specific colors in certain ways but every brain is different hence everyone’s reaction to a color is subjective. One person may say Matisse is the greatest artist that ever lived, another may say Picasso — you say tomato, I say…

Portrait of Sir Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton color chart dates back to the 1600s.

We Have Seen the Light

Sir Isaac Newton developed a theory of color based on studying how white light breaks into colors when viewed through a prism. The Ancient Egyptians used color for cures to ailments. Some of the earliest studies of light were by Aristotle who discovered that two colors, when mixed together, can form another color. Okay, so what does all of this have to do with web design? A lot.

Color and Website Design

Smart marketing takes color perceptions seriously.

White is seen as purity, the absence of color, sterile.

Black, though it can symbolize evil, also communications power and sophistication.

Blue is the favorite color for a large majority. It is also the considered the favorite of men.

Red is loud — it grabs attention, it conveys excitement, intensity, even anger, but it is also the color of love; just think of Valentine’s Day.

Pink varies — depending on the hue and shade (hot pink, pastel pink, fuchsia, etc.). Light pink is usually associated with love (hearts), innocence and sweetness (baby girls) so, depending on who you’re trying to attract to your website and services, it can be a good choice. A great example is the pink ribbon associated with fighting breast cancer. Pink can also be a very poor choice when you want to attract business clients and project an image of power and strength. Pink can look weak, childish and frilly which does the opposite of inspiring consumer confidence.

Green has a calming effect and relieves stress (nature). Of course depending on how it is used it can also convey power and money or jealousy.

Brown is another symbol of nature and tranquility (wood, soil) and can imply safety, security.

Purple may strike people as exotic, spiritual, or it can imply great wealth. I would be remiss if I didn’t caution designers that purple is a very slippery slope. It can come across as arty-fartsy and unprofessional, especially to corporate clients.

Yellow is cheery and positive like the sun but it also can be overwhelming and should only be used sparingly in web design.

Orange can work wonderfully as a highlight color. Keep in mind though that color combinations that include orange can evoke very different emotions. Orange and brown can convey sophistication, orange with red and yellow is great for websites to attract children, parents of young children and/or industries that provide services for elementary-school aged children. Orange with blue is another tricky combo. They are complementary colors and can look electric, as if they’re vibrating, which can be dizzying and make the text difficult to read. Orange and blue, if chosen correctly, can look strong and stylish.

The bottom line is this: when you choose a web designer it makes a huge difference if they have a strong background in the psychology of colors, eye tracking (see article “Eye Tracking: How the Eye Scans Your Web Pages“) and experience with search engine optimization (SEO), keywords, trending topics, and a strong understanding and success rate with social media accounts. At the very least they should understand that YouTube has become the second most popular search engine — Google, of course, is number one. For a website to look current and professional it must include icon links to, at the very least, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. Pinterest is growing at a rapid rate in popularity. Depending on the crowd you want to attract, your website designer should consider all of the additional socialmedia options too, i.e., Reddit, Stumbleupon, Google+.

Eyetracking maps reflect the pattern of web page viewer's eye movements. If your most important goal is a call to action these are simple patterns to guide the way people view your website.

Eye tracking determines the eye movements when a visitor first sees your website. Researchers have determined that these are the most common patterns of where the eye first goes to on a web page and then where it moves. This happens in a second as soon as the viewer clicks on your page. The graphs below shows the most common theories (for additional website design tips and tricks see article “The Psychology of Color“).

In this first graph, the circle represents where the eye first goes and then it tracks the way the eye scans the rest of the page and the arrow is where the eye ends up last on their first view.

This graph from Google shows how the eye travels. The colors are “heat spots” — i.e. the most intense and darkest color in this image is where the eye is drawn to the fastest and has the strongest pull. The lightest shade of color represents the worst “real estate” of the page.

The next graph shows the visitor’s eye beginning at the top left of the page, then scanning across the top, where the navigation links are usually placed on websites then the eyes move down. This is basically the way an eye moves as you read a book: left to right, down, left to right, down, etc. The pattern looks like an “F.”

The bottom graph is the same pattern you would use when writing the letter “Z.”

Fear and anger swelled up but curiosity won out and I clicked “Add Friend.” He accepted within minutes. Stunned, I wondered if he had forgotten raping me, or if he thought I had.

by ZOSIA BIELSKI for The Globe and Mail
Toronto actress Alice Moran wore a knee-length, polka dot dress the night she was sexually assaulted, one victim in a string of attacks in the city’s Annex neighbourhood this summer.
When Ms. Moran decided to share her story on Facebook last week, it was her attempt to counter public perceptions about victims of sexual assault – specifically a controversial tweet by Krista Ford: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s niece recently opined on Twitter that a woman looking to evade rapists shouldn’t “dress like a whore.”
For years, victims of sexual assault have unburdened themselves on Facebook: Groups such as “Sexual Assault Survivors” have helped women bond. But now, women like Ms. Moran are going even more broadly public, online, to gain control over their own narratives. In some cases, they’re using social media to out and shame the perpetrators.
In July, 17-year-old Savannah Dietrich of Louisville, Ky., took to Twitter to out two acquaintances who had raped her at a party and then shared photos of the attack. When the men struck a plea deal, Ms. Dietrich named them, risking jail time herself: “I’m not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell,” she tweeted. Other women have turned to the Web to post warnings about their college campuses, and also to permanently mark up the men’s online identities.

Dorri Olds took it a notch higher: She friended one of her rapists on Facebook, and let it rip. “It felt good to vent, I tell ya,” Ms. Olds said in an interview from New York.
Ms. Olds was 13 when five boys from her high school gang-raped her in a cemetery. The girl blamed herself for wearing “a shimmery, low-cut shirt” her mother didn’t approve of that night, and didn’t press charges. Nearly four decades later, Ms. Olds was on Facebook when the social media site offered up one of its automated friend suggestions: one of the boys who had been involved in the attack, now an adult with a wife and daughter. She clicked “Add Friend.”
“It felt like I was punched in the stomach, it was horrible. Then I saw an opportunity. I’m going to give this back to him. Why should I be the one who’s carried this around? If he has grown into a man with any kind of conscience, maybe he’ll feel bad.”
She sent him a private message: “I hope that night has haunted you. I was naïve and a virgin. I see you have a teenage daughter now. Better keep her safe from guys like you.” The man didn’t respond, and Ms. Olds defriended him. Ultimately, she said, the experience opened an old wound, but also made her life feel “freer.”
That catharsis is common for sexual assault victims who’ve “come out” online. But there are risks, legal and emotional, say those who work with survivors. “The absolute lack of security is foolhardy, and it presupposes a shift in culture around these issues that we haven’t seen yet,” says Amanda Dale, executive director of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, which serves women experiencing violence in Toronto.
“We don’t want to reinforce the message of shame and keep these things so private that we never shift the conversation,” said Ms. Dale. “That’s why young women like [Alice Moran] are taking the step to go bold and go public, because they feel like they’re warriors on the edge of a social taboo. But there are consequences for that.”
“It is a spotlight that burns you very, very badly,” said Jane Doe, the Toronto woman who successfully sued police for negligence after her 1986 rape by a known offender – the “Balcony Rapist,” Paul Callow.
Jane Doe – who chose to maintain her anonymity under legislation that protects the privacy of those who experience sexual assault – questions why so much of the responsibility continues falling to women, including identifying themselves online to help catch rapists and prevent future crimes.
She says she’s especially “disturbed” by this push because less than 1 per cent of perpetrators of sexual assault were held accountable in 2004, according to recent research conducted by University of Ottawa criminology professor Holly Johnson.
“Despite the legislation that was enacted to ‘protect’ them, now they have to come forward, use their real names, stand up, speak out, take one for the team, when the shame and stigma attached to women who experience rape and sexual assault is as great and problematic as it’s ever been,” she said.
Still, she supports whatever women choose: “They do it because it’s their right to do it, because the anonymity prevents us from understanding the nature of the crime or its effects.”
After Face-friending her attacker, Ms. Olds penned an essay about the experience for The New York Times. Her hope was that women would not remain silent, as she’d done before her statute of limitations ran out. She said “a beautiful outcome” of the piece was that people from her hometown came out of the woodwork, offering their support.
“I’m all for women having a voice. It was a different world then in the mid-seventies: there was no Internet. I don’t know how I would have handled it today,” said Ms. Olds, who works as a social media consultant in Manhattan, where she lives with her boyfriend.
“I guess I was hoping that women would see that you can go through horrible things and not only survive but thrive and have a really good life anyway,” said Ms. Olds. “I have a happy life.”

Okay, so why does Facebook keep changing? The peeps at Facebook are smart. They don’t want other social networking sites to come along and just mimic what they do and steal their Facebookers away. Through constantly analyzing the user experience online, Facebook adjusts accordingly trying to stay ahead of the curve.
Privacy issues are one of the major complaints but keep in mind that outside sites are only allowed access to the information you have listed as public.
Facebook is not going away, even if you’re mad at them for changing. Facebook is predicted to continue to grow and change in 2012. Facebook will buy Digg and improve it’s content curation.
Content Curation is the act of discovering, gathering, and presenting digital content that surrounds specific subject matter. Though it is still considered a “buzz word” by many in the content world, content curation is now becoming a marketing staple for many companies with a successful online presence.
Another prediction is Facebook’s IPO in 2012. For those who don’t know IPO is an acronym for Initial Public Offering, i.e., the first sale of stock by a private company to the public. May 2012 is the predicted estimated date for Facebook to release its financial information to the public. At that time, because they will have been required to release that info, it is a strong likelihood that Facebook will become a public company. They will fenagle it to their advantage by raising even more money than they’re making now.
Mark Zuckerberg predicted that Facebook will reach 1 billion users in 2012. To learn more about the IPO and how that will translate into dollars read The Wall Street Journal Post, “Facebook Numbers Feed IPO Outlook.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m sticking with Facebook.

Social Media and TV
You can already check in to TV programs for conversations with people around the world who are watching the same shows. Steve Jobs’s last project was Apple’s iTV and the buzz is that it may transform home entertainment.

Curation of Content
Curata is a web-based content curation tool that can help you streamline your online content marketing efforts. Now you can easily find, organize and share the best content for your blog. Curata helps you to achieve higher keyword ranking in the search engines and increase website traffic.

Location-based Social Media
The technology in mobile devices is more powerful and more affordable than ever. This combination of power and economy is contributing to an increase in mobile social activity. A large user base with geographic ties allows brands to target small, qualified groups of users with unique and relevant messaging.

LinkedIn
As search engines rely more on social signals, it is important to have an active presence in the channels that carry the most search engine weight. LinkedIn is one such channel, and can be a very effective tool for connecting with business consumers as well as getting yourself to rank higher in search engine results.
